Lyme disease, also known as Lyme borreliosis, is an infectious disease caused by the Borrelia bacterium which is spread by ticks. The most common sign of infection is an expanding area of redness on the skin, known as erythema migrans, that appears at the site of the tick bite about a week after it occurred.

Recent publications have shown that Spirochetes, the bacterias involved in Lyme disease, were found in 90% of the people who suffer from AD. Other research groups showed that bacteria involved in periodontitis were also linked to the development of the disease. All these concurrent results on the role of brain infection and inflammation in the development of AD show the importance of restoring a strong and balanced immune system in order to stop the progress of the disease.

But all we want is more, we want to reverse ageing and this is what Pluripotent Stem Cells, PSC, can do.

In the more than five years of Stem Cells treatment practice, most of the Stemaid patients who received PSC to treat a specific ailment, noticed interesting side- effects after a few injections. We then decided to study the anti-ageing effect of PSC on individuals who had no major illnesses, all aged between 50 and 70. Several hormonal markers were measured during the study as well as their leucocyte telomere length. The telomere is the DNA-protein complex on the end of our chromosomes that are described as one of the best biological markers of ageing. The shorter they are, the less responsive our cells become and the more we age. All the 15 patients who enrolled in the study described a marked improvement in their energy level. The blood tests showed an increase of testosterone and estrogen for a majority of them and within the last 6 months of the study which lasted one year, they all had their telomere length increase by an average of 14%. This clearly showed that independently of the biological age they had at the beginning of the study, they all had a reversing of their age at the DNA level.

Recovery from brain injury is possible thanks to stem cell therapy.

What are Stem Cells?

Stem cells have the remarkable potential to develop into many different cell types in the body during early life and growth. In addition, in many tissues they serve as a sort of internal repair system, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential either to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialised function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell.

Stem cells are distinguished from other cell types by two important characteristics. First, they are un-specialised cells capable of renewing themselves through cell division, sometimes after long periods of inactivity. Second, under certain physiologic or experimental conditions, they can be induced to become tissue- or organ-specific cells with special functions. In some organs, such as the gut and bone marrow, stem cells regularly divide to repair and replace worn out or damaged tissues. In other organs, however, such as the pancreas and the heart, stem cells only divide under special conditions.

Until recently, scientists primarily worked with two kinds of stem cells from animals and humans: embryonic stem cells and non-embryonic “somatic” or “adult” stem cells. The functions and characteristics of these cells will be explained here. Scientists discovered ways to derive embryonic stem cells from early mouse embryos more than 30 years ago, in 1981. The detailed study of the biology of mouse stem cells led to the discovery, in 1998, of a method to derive stem cells from human embryos and grow the cells in the laboratory. These cells are called human embryonic stem cells. The embryos used in these studies were created for reproductive purposes through in vitro fertilization procedures.

When they were no longer needed for that purpose, they were donated for research with the informed consent of the donor. In 2006, researchers made another breakthrough by identifying conditions that would allow some specialised adult cells to be “reprogrammed” genetically to assume a pluripotent, stem cell state. This new type of stem cell called induced pluripotent stem cells (IPSCs).

Stem cells are important for living organisms for many reasons. In the 3- to 5-day-old embryo, called a blastocyst, the inner cells give rise to the entire body of the organism, including all of the many specialised cell types and organs such as the heart, lungs, skin, sperm, eggs and other tissues. In some adult tissues, such as bone marrow, muscle and brain, discrete populations of adult stem cells generate replacements for cells that are lost through normal wear and tear, injury, or disease.

Given their unique regenerative abilities, stem cells offer new potentials for treating diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.

Umbilical Cord Stem Cells

These are adult cells, which are sometimes referred to as mesenchymal cells and are collected from the umbilical cord at birth. They are predetermined for certain functions. In the case of mesenchymal cells, their “mission” or genetically determined function is to repair skin, conjunctive tissues, muscle and tendon damage.

Adipose Tissue Stem Cells

Like umbilical cord stem cells, these are also mesenchymal stem cells. As they are harvested from the patient’s body fat, they carry its DNA and therefore will not be rejected. In contrast, umbilical cord cells are rejected after a few hours. Although adipose tissue stem cells are more efficient than umbilical cord stem cells, they share similar limitations.

In fact, they are limited to their predetermined application, which is mainly in healing skin, tendons, and conjunctive tissues. It is important to note that once harvested via liposuction, the amount of mesenchymal cells available in the future from fat will be reduced. In addition, these stem cells are the same age as your other cells.

All adult stem cells age at the same pace as their host. Thus, adipose stem cells will not help with in-depth rejuvenation of the body. They will only repair the wears and tears of conjunctive tissues, as their predetermined function allows.

Hematopoietic Stem Cells

These cells, harvested from patients’ bone marrow are predetermined to help with all blood related issues, including blood vessels and the immune system. Thus, they may facilitate healing of blood-related conditions.

Fetal Stem Cells

These cells are extracted from a 6 week-old aborted fetus. They carry a variety of adult stem cells. From our research, several cases have been reported in which patients had developed tumors after spinal treatment with fetal stem cells.

Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (IPSC)

Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells are prepared by introducing foreign genes into adult cells. These cells behave like embryonic stem cells and are theoretically able to stimulate repair in the entire body. However, they are not considered fully embryonic due to their foreign genes and this limits their range of application.

Pluripotent Stem Cells

Pluripotent stem cells are derived from a blastocyst (either donated or cloned from a skin-cell), which is an early-stage embryo (5 days old) of 100-200 cells that are barely visible to the naked eye. At this stage, these cells are not yet predetermined or specialised in any way, so there are no organs or blood even, just an “inner cell mass” from which embryonic stem cells can be obtained.

Unlike adult cells, which are limited to differentiating into different cell types of their tissue of origin, Pluripotent can express the DNA of all cell-types of the body. When introduced into the bloodstream, these pluripotent cells operate by way of signalling and within minutes their molecules (microRNAs) signal every organ of the body to rejuvenate and repair. For example, the brain will start to release neural stem cells, which are the cells that can repair the brain, the heart will release cardiac cells, the lungs, pulmonary cells, and the skin, mesenchymal cells and so on.

The wide range of application of pluripotent stem cells is what makes them so well suited to treating numerous conditions. Once signalling has taken place, the body naturally eliminates the Stem Cell within 72 hours, while the newly created cells in the various parts of the body continue to do their repair work for up to 3 months. Unlike the other cell types mentioned above, pluripotent stem cells also have the added advantage of producing a protein which has anti-tumour properties.

Is it ethical to use Embryonic Stem Cells for Therapy?

Embryonic stem cells are derived from a blastocyst which is the stage of an embryo 0-4 days after fusion of an egg and spermatozoa.

A decade ago, in order to produce such a blastocyst and derive embryonic stem cells from it, our scientists needed to retrieve eggs from a woman and collect sperm from a male and then fertilize the egg in a petri dish. Nowadays, it is no longer necessary to retrieve eggs or sperm to produce a blastocyst. Our scientists are able to produce an egg from a skin cell. They are also able to fuse such an egg with a fibroblast (skin cell) to produce an embryo.

In other words, our Embryonic stem cells are produced by transforming skin cells into embryonic stem cells following several advanced scientific steps. The blastocyst produced in the process of this transformation is a transient stage where the skin cell is fully returned to its original embryonic stage. No life is being produced or destroyed. There is only a transformation of old living cells into young and more effective ones.

How long does the procedure take?

If you are given a simple intravenous injection, the duration of the actual procedure will not usually exceed 2 hours, but normally our treatments range between one to five weeks.

I read that pluripotent stem-cells can cause cancer. Is this true?

There is no scientific evidence that embryonic stem cells may cause cancer. In fact, embryonic stem cells are the only stem cells that have been scientifically proven to produce anti-tumour proteins that can shrink and even kill tumours. Others, including umbilical stem-cells and adult stem-cells, do not have this anti-cancer effect.
