What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) and how does it Work?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is a procedure that has been around for quite some time. In recent years, it has become an increasingly common practice in the world of medical treatments and health-supporting therapies, with far-reaching benefits. For many, it is a life-changing procedure that has been a game-changer in their health and physical condition.
While most people may recognise the term ‘hyperbaric’ in association with divers suffering from ‘the bends’ or Decompression Illness, there are many other conditions that can benefit from the treatment. HBOT is being used increasingly by physicians and hospitals as a supporting therapy and its benefits are well-documented. In fact, many people are surprised to discover that this modern, alternate therapy, has been around for over 100 years.
As a non-invasive, alternate treatment HBOT can be used for an extensive range of illnesses, including long-term, degenerative or age-related diseases, and is useful for promoting accelerated healing. The increase of normal oxygen levels in the body pushes healing benefits to the lymphatic system, nervous system, spinal and cerebral fluids. It promotes a feeling of well-being along with enhanced healing and rejuvenation.
What is Hyperbaric Treatment?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment is the delivery of almost 100% oxygen under pressure to a patient. Treatment is conducted in an individual or communal hyperbaric chamber under the supervision of qualified professionals and patients are monitored closely as chamber pressure increases slowly.
In layman’s terms, the therapy increases the amount of oxygen that blood can transport through the body to vital organs, tissues, and muscles. Improved oxygen levels promote strength, endurance, and faster healing and can support the body’s resistance to injury and improve mental clarity, physical health, and wellbeing. HBOT treatment is routinely used by athletes the world over to improve endurance and resilience.
It has also been adopted as an alternative to other age-improving therapies as the increased blood flow and circulatory benefits help the skin improve and rejuvenate, Reversing some of the signs of ageing and enhancing overall appearance and complexion.
What conditions may benefit from HBOT?
Research shows that a host of medical conditions and chronic diseases can benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. A large number of health problems and issues can benefit from undergoing hyperbaric treatments, and therapy is used in a growing list of illnesses and ailments.
Along with being used as a health-promoting treatment, HBOT has also been adopted as a performance-enhancing therapy by athletes, gymnasts, and other competitors. HBOT is also used to treat the following:
- Lyme Disease
- Chronic Illness
- Cerebral Palsy
- Pulmonary Fibrosis
- Heart Disease
- Brain Injury
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
In addition to the conditions listed, ongoing research is continually adding new treatment options and advising HBOT therapy for patients suffering from other illnesses. There have been early indicators that HBOT may be an early intervention treatment for victims of the recent COVID19 pandemic. Patients that had contracted the virus were shown to have lower than normal oxygen levels in the blood. HBOT treatments administered at the first sign of oxygen level decline was proven to help to stabilise and normalise readings.
HBOT is also beneficial for promoting the healing process of burns, plastic surgery, wounds, and smoke inhalation, along with combating symptoms of orthopaedic and degenerative diseases. For those with hearing issues or deafness, HBOT treatment has been shown to yield positive results, and as the therapy can be administered to children, it is also making positive improvements in symptoms of Autism sufferers
What does the treatment involve?
BOT treatment is the delivery of 100% oxygen in a safe, pressure-controlled environment. Patients undergoing therapy will be seated in one of our 2 state-of-the-art Hyperbaric Chambers and accompanied at all times by a Qualified Attendant for an extra level of safety. The shared multi-person chamber is comfortable and seated patients may perform normal tasks during the low-stress procedure like watching TV or listening to music.
Chamber pressure is slowly increased and the patient breathes normally, inhaling the oxygen through a comfortable silicone mask. This increases the delivery of oxygen through the bloodstream up to 2000% and stimulates the body’s natural healing response. Increased molecular oxygen floods the system and reaches bone and tissue not ordinarily accessible to blood cells, and can promote the formation of new blood vessels and capillaries.
Is HBOT safe?
s HBOT is a non-invasive, non-chemical procedure it is inherently safe when compared to other alternative therapies and treatments, The majority of complications come from the unique aspects of the treatment such as pressure changes in the chamber and exposure to increased oxygen levels.
Increased pressure levels can occasionally cause ear discomfort or ‘popping’ sounds similar to those experienced on a plane, and these generally subside quite quickly.
Some patients experience feelings of claustrophobia due to the confined nature of the hyperbaric chamber. This can be alleviated by using a multi-person unit similar to the 2 that are installed at Poseidonia.
Most side-effects are mild in nature and create no ongoing or long-term complications. Overall HBOT treatment is generally well-tolerated by all patients and age groups, but is not recommended for patients suffering from certain types of lung disease.
What are the benefits of HBOT?
Advocates of HBOT report a varied array of benefits gained from the treatment. While some conditions may take several sessions to experience results, many patients report improvements after just 1 session. The physical changes that are brought about due to undergoing HBOT treatment sessions can include:
● Increased oxygenation to tissues and muscles
● Increased blood flow
● Improved circulation
● Improved white blood cell counts
● Accelerated healing
● New blood vessel formation
The increase of oxygen through the body promotes and enhances health and healing. White blood cells rejuvenate, tissues and muscles strengthen and heal faster. Other areas that can benefit are those not normally reached by the body’s normal oxygen-carrying capacity, bones, the spinal column, and even fluids like those found in the brain or spinal column can be positively impacted.
Revitalising and rejuvenation of the skin by the formation of collagen and tissue repair helps to heal wounds from injury or surgery faster, while overall immune system support and detoxification of cells improved the bodies response to bacteria and fungi increasing resistance to illness or infection. Cognitive function, mental clarity and the faster regeneration of blood cells at a molecular level help with communication, motivation and better brain function.
