Cryotherapy

HOW CAN CRYOTHERAPY HELP YOU?

Cryotherapy has been proven to help decrease inflammation, increase performance levels and metabolism, it reduces chronic pain and fatigue and gives your entire body a positive boost.

Decreases Inflammation

Have you ever applied an Ice pack to an injury? If so then you have already experienced Cryotherapy on a smaller scale.

Cryotherapy at this level and using the ICE QUEEN Whole Body Cryo Therapy (WBCT) Cryocapsule will reduce any and all inflammations throughout your whole body. Healing will occur in more than one area at a time and in a much higher and effective manner.

Imagine an injury on your arm and leg; Cryotherapy will automatically target these areas. Cryotherapy also stimulates the vagus nerve, which in turn reduces anxiety and fatigue.

The Vagus nerve is the Body’s ‘Manager’ of your inner nerve centre – the parasympathetic nervous system, to be specific.

Like a good Manager, the Vagus nerve does a fantastic job of overseeing a vast range of crucial functions; including communicating nerve impulses to every organ in your body.

New research has now revealed that this could be the missing link when trying to treat chronic inflammations, could this be the beginning of an exciting new field of treatment that leaves the normal day to day medications behind?

Increases Performance Levels

You are most probably aware that many athletes use Cryotherapy regularly as the treatment helps them recover from their recent activity. Since joint and muscle strength is increased athletes can resume training sooner and improve their outcome after any ailments. Also, during Cryotherapy, the muscles and tissues are not frozen therefore one can start exercising again almost immediately unlike when using ice baths, the muscles do not need any time to recover after a Cryotherapy session.

Increased Metabolism

Who would not like to burn calories/lose weight by just standing still for 2 Minutes?

After a session of Ice Queen WBCT, the body burns a huge amount of energy to reheat and restore the body to its normal levels, whilst you personally will not notice this during your simple 2-minute WBCT session or indeed afterwards, you will nonetheless burn approximately 500 to 800 calories during and after this WBCT process. This is equivalent to nearly 3 hours/18km of brisk walking for an average-sized person!

Reduction of Chronic Pain and Fatigue

For those that suffer from chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia or other general body pains, Cryotherapy reduces all of these. Some people experience a few hours of relief, while others enjoy a relief that lasts days and even longer. Each individual is different so results will vary, most participants feel that two minutes of apparent cold is well worth the many hours/days/weeks of pain relief later. It allows you to start to manage your ailment better and resume a normal lifestyle. Repetition, however, will lead to the creation, the more this WBCT is used the longer the relief or repair will last.

positive emotions

Rather than reach out for antidepressants, many opt for Cryotherapy instead. The procedure releases huge amounts of endorphins into the bloodstream counteracting your Cortisol levels which makes you feel unhappy. You can immediately feel your positive mood increasing even after a single Cryotherapy session. Endorphins interact with pain receptors thus reducing pain perception.

Reduces migraine symptoms

Cryotherapy can help treat migraines by cooling and numbing nerves in the neck area. One study found that applying a neck wrap containing two frozen ice packs to the carotid arteries in the neck significantly reduced migraine pain. It’s thought that this works by cooling the blood passing through intracranial vessels.

Numbs nerve irritation

Many athletes have been using cryotherapy to treat injuries for years, and one of the reasons is that it can numb the pain or address an irritated nerve. This can help treat pinched nerves or neuromas, chronic pain and even acute injuries.

Treats Atopic Dermatitis and other skin conditions

Atopic dermatitis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease with signature symptoms of dry and itchy skin. Because Cryotherapy can improve antioxidant levels in the blood and can simultaneously reduce inflammation, it makes sense that both localized and whole-body cryotherapy can help treat Atopic Dermatitis.

Cryotherapy is a form of  “cold therapy,” a technique that is used to expose the body to ultra low cold temperatures for several minutes. Originally developed 1978 in Japan, Cryotherapy was used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. Since then the Europeans have studied and refined it benefits.

Whole Body Cryotherapy is something we are proud to now be able to offer in Cyprus. Our Cryochamber uses liquid nitrogen and it lowers your skin temperature to about 1-5 degrees °C in a period of two minutes. We use the Liquid nitrogen to make it cold, but you are not in direct contact with the gas. Because our skin reacts to the cold, it sends messages to the brain, and it stimulates regulatory functions of the body, assisting areas that might not be working to their fullest potential.

How Cryotherapy Works?

The method is based on a very rapid and short-term cooling of the body’s surface to produce a protective response of the body to such extreme exposure to cold.

The surface of the skin for 2-3 minutes is subjected to sharp cooling by very low temperatures (from -130 to -160 degrees).
Cold receptors quickly form an “alarm” about the external danger and send it to the brain. Then the body shows a natural protective reaction and activates its own forces to maintain life.

Simultaneously with the protection, the process of self-diagnosis of the body to find an external aggressor is launched, and all the inconsistencies found in the work of internal organs and systems are regulated and corrected.
The positive effect is noticeable at the end of the first procedure, but the action continues after – cryotherapy is a kind of catalyst of corrective processes.

What is Cryotherapy?

Cryotherapy – a hyper-cooling process that lowers a person’s skin temperature to approximately 1⁰ C for a period of up to two minutes by enveloping the body with extremely cold air at temperatures ranging from -130 C to -160 C. This extremely cold temperature, in turn, reduces inflammations throughout the body amongst many other health benefits.

During the treatment thermo-receptors under the skin send signals to the brain. This intense cooling induces a number of giant physiologic changes in your body. Initially, as the blood vessels constrict, blood moves away from the limbs and towards the vital organs of the body. This is a protective and natural measure that the body takes in response to extreme cold, the immune system is fully alert and increases its white blood cell count reducing inflammations whilst giving you a positive, powerful immune system response.

Circulation is improved and the body’s water weight is reduced as the circulatory system reacts to regain its normal temperatures, this reaction burns 500-800 calories. Huge amounts of Toxins left in the tissues are now ‘dumped’ and flushed from peripheral tissues and the blood becomes enriched with oxygen, enzymes, and nutrients. The body then activates all of its natural healing abilities and the endocrine system jumps into action with an endorphin and noradrenaline release resulting in an increase of “feel good” hormones in the bloodstream.

A Cryotherapy session will induce a total systemic response that offers many advantages: reduced pain, increased recovery, improved muscle strength and hormone production to name but a few. As the body warms up again, the enriched blood flows back through the body through a process called vasodilatation.

The many benefits of Cryotherapy include reduced inflammation, accelerated sports recovery, improved sleep, elevated mood, brainpower/mental alertness and vigilance, as well as collagen and antioxidant synthesis. The healing time is different for everyone. However, it is recommended to have a course of 10-15 consecutive treatments for the absolute maximum results.

How Cryotherapy Works

The method is based on very rapid and short-term cooling of the body’s surface to produce a protective response of the body to such extreme exposure to cold.

  1. The surface of the skin for 2-3 minutes is subjected to sharp cooling by very low temperatures (from -130 to -160 degrees).
  2. Cold receptors quickly form an “alarm” about the external danger and send it to the brain.
  3. The body shows a natural protective reaction and activates its own forces to maintain life.
  4. Simultaneously with the protection, the process of self-diagnosis of the body to find an external aggressor is launched, and all the inconsistencies found in the work of internal organs and systems are regulated and corrected.
  5. The positive effect is noticeable at the end of the first procedure, but the action continues after – Cryotherapy is a kind of catalyst of corrective processes.

The safety of such low body temperatures lies in a sharp and even, not gradual impact – the surface of the skin is immediately cooled to a boundary mark, while the vessels are narrowed, which protects the internal organs from hypothermia. When the temperature inside the body begins to drop, the procedure is already over.

There is a local and general method of Cryotherapy, which differ in the area of exposure, the source of the cold, duration, the conditions of the procedure and the results. Local Cryotherapy affects a specific problem area, affecting local cold receptors, and the general covers the entire body, cooperating with the central nervous system.

General Cryotherapy

The effectiveness of Cryotherapy directly depends on the area of impact – the more the body surface is cooled, the more receptors form alarm signals and, therefore, the stronger and more responsive the body reacts. Therefore, modern Cryotherapy equipment is presented with closed chambers and capsules in which the patient can fit almost completely. In addition, the airtight design ensures temperature stability and even distribution of cooling effects throughout the body, which guarantees not only the result but also the safety of the procedure.

Therapeutic Cryo-equipment is not intended for rapid hardening, but to stimulate the body to solve disorders and problems on its own. Cold, in this case, is only a tool, an irritant.

Cryotherapy is actively used in a variety of fields: treatment, recovery, rejuvenation, weight adjustment. Cryosaunas for clinics that contribute to the rapid recovery of the body after sports and other types of injuries have proven effectiveness.

The difference between a Cryochamber and a Cryosauna is simple;

With a Cryosauna, your head is left sticking out of the top and you are not completely isolated inside, it takes longer to reach the correct temperature so you only have around 30 seconds at -130 as opposed to the Cryochamber which you step into and it is sealed off. The chamber allows for a more uniform distribution of temperate and you will reach -130⁰ C and more within the first 15-20 seconds of the treatment.

All athletes sustain an injury at some point or another; whether it is a minor sprain or a ligament tear that requires serious surgery. Regardless, every single athletic injury can benefit from Whole Body Cryo Therapy.

Applying cold to an injury produces two important effects; it helps relieve pain and it reduces swelling. Cold slows down nerve activity creating a numbing effect and reducing the sensation of pain without any of the side effects that prescription or OTC medications might cause.

Whole Body Cryotherapy also helps reduce swelling and slows down cellular metabolism, allowing your body to heal faster. Excess swelling can impede the healing process contributing to uncomfortable pressure pain. Slower cellular metabolism means less cell death and therefore less tissue for the body to repair.

Successful application of Whole Body Cryo Therapy requires a recovery approach of multiple sessions, ideally 10-15 treatments. While this might be inconvenient to some, it is nonetheless an exceptionally small commitment to make for athletes who wish to return to their normal routines as fast as possible.

Many athletes use cryotherapy prophylactically prior to events and many after practices or games so that sore muscles recover more quickly.
